I have been drinking Ska since discovering their "Mexican Logger" at OTP on a blazing August afternoon in 2014.
It is based in Durango but I never visited on any of my previous trips; it's a few miles south of downtown, in an area that is basically an industrial park, with no views of the river or indoor views of the mountains. While not entirely analogous to my refusal to eat fast food on road trips, it is in the same spirit: Why venture to one of the most ruggedly gorgeous areas in all of America and then sit inside a brewery that could be anywhere in America?
But I was hungry on this morning as I drove into town from the south, and Ska was on the way, so I figured I might as well. If I didn't visit right now, I probably never would.
I started with the pub chips - housemade chips in malt vinegar with blue cheese and green onion. The chips were outstanding. The blue cheese was a distraction. They would have been better with just the malt vinegar.
The red chile brisket flatbread was much better. I have always enjoyed the combination of brisket and corn, and this was no exception.
When I had seen the price tag before ordering - $8.52 - I assumed it would be appetizer-sized. It was a full-sized pizza and I could not even finish it. I would not have ordered the chips had I known the flatbread would be this large.
I also purchased a six-pack of Mexican Logger with Lime & Salt. I have not yet had this version. I will wait until we hit 80º - probably many months away for me - before opening it.
