As you probably know, I love Colorado. I lived in the state when I was 21 and I have visited it on 28 other occasions, including this one.
There are lots of towns I have “been to” in the state - by which I mean I have spent time there. at least a night. Definitely a meal or a beer.
There are other towns I have “driven through” - by which I mean I have… well, driven through. Maybe I stopped for gas, or ducked in to Dollar General for a Pepsi Zero. But I have not spent considerable time there.
But there are very few towns in the state to which I have never been.
Salida is one of them.
I have considered going there on a couple of occasions - even drove within three miles of it once before changing my mind - and have heard nothing but good things about it. However, it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago when one of the tennis instructors at my work, probably the nicest person I have met in New Mexico, said that the dream for him and his wife is to buy a house in Salida one day.
That settled it for me. I needed to see the place. So I decided to make it the destination for the first night of this trip.
Spoiler alert: I fucking LOVED it.
It might be my new favorite town in Colorado.
