The Crack Shack

I've never had a particularly strong desire to try the Crack Shack - I have had multiple opportunities and always passed them up. (The Pasadena location opened a few weeks before I moved away, but I just got the feeling the best thing about the place is its name.)

Zach listed it as an option for lunch. He said that the place is okay, nothing too special, but the wait would not be bad - unlike some other popular places on a Saturday afternoon near the beach - and there is plenty of room for the kids to run around.

So I said let's do it.

The place looked exactly as I expected it to.

I have always been a fan of any place that lets you dispense your own condiments. The revelation from this meal was the pineapple mustard - simply fantastic.

And the kids do indeed love it there.

I do not remember which beer I ordered.

Jenna had a salad because she is healthier than Zach and I.

Zach had a plate of fried chicken and he ate it all.

I had the Coop Deville: fried chicken, pickled fresno chiles, pickles, lime mayo, and napa cabbage. It was very good. Every restaurant has a fried chicken sandwich these days and I have had some truly great ones (including making my own) and this was definitely good.

But not great.

I also got an order of the "fire nugs" to share. They were certainly spicy (but not crazy-spicy). I enjoyed them but would not order them again.

We got two orders of fries, which were very good, especially with the aforementioned pineapple mustard.

I liked Crack Shack, more than I thought I would, but still was not particularly impressed. I understand why the place is popular... but I also understand why the L.A. County locations closed.

There is an In-N-Out directly across the street and several tables were occupied with people eating that instead of the Crack Shack's food. This stuck me as bizarre - it wasn't just kids eating In-N-Out while their parents ate fried chicken and drank beer; there were tables of adults eating it as well - but then again, I know which one I prefer.
