A Global Reunification 16 Years Later

In 2008, my then-girlfriend and I had just moved into an apartment together in South Pasadena. Shortly after, we had Tracie over for dinner. Not all of my possessions had been moved in, including my kitchen stuff.

While the ladies were drinking, I went by Bristol Farms to pick up a last-minute item, and decided I should buy a knife, too. Except I did not like their selection, and it was all overpriced because it was Bristol Farms.

So I went by Tracie's place and borrowed one of her knives, figuring she would just take it back when she left. But then we got really drunk and both forgot.

I never returned it to her. Not when I moved into another apartment around the corner a year later; not when I moved to New York City three years after that; not when I moved back to California two years after that; not when I moved to New Mexico five years after that.

This knife moved with me all over the country. I packed it up many times. But I never returned it to her.

Until this evening.*

*I wonder if it's still at Murph's and has not been used. Actually... if the first part is correct, the second party definitely is.
